What is the difference between traditional and self-publishing?

They may have to do their own editing, proofing, formatting, cover designing, marketing and distribution or get some professionals to do these tasks for them. Another critical factor of difference is speed. With traditional publishing, it can take a long time as it goes through the publisher's process. When the manuscript is complete, self-publishing can be a lot quicker. Money is another consideration. In self-publishing, the book author usually covers the costs for preparation and promotion of the book. As a counterpart, they might receive greater pricing and royalty flexibility. Both are not necessarily preferable. The decision will depend on the goals you have, budget, experience, and level of control over your book. Self-publishing might be your best choice if you want to decide when and how your book gets to your readers, and you like the idea of creative control. Traditional publishing might be more appropriate if you like having a professional publishing company help you along, and you're okay with having to go through a lengthy selection process.
